I'm going to give you a rough background on what the series and the plots are about based on my limited understanding, especially for those who haven't read the books, it's for the sake being able to understand my post better.
Here is goes,
It all began when the world was just like how it is today. As we all know, solar flares, in other words, large explosions occurring in the Sun's atmosphere, they tend to happen from time to time in the Sun.
In the world of The Maze Runner, it's Sci-Fi, Post-Apocalyptic and Dystopian-Future based.
It all began when the solar flares were severely on-going, when all of a sudden, they scorched certain parts of the Earth. The places that were affected by the solar flares became scorched waste lands.
Ever since the solar flares, as predicted, many people died on a massive scale. Many countries were affected and were going through famine, and it was tough taking care of the civilians since they were severely running out of natural resources.
Knowing that the world was already in catastrophe, out of desperation, governments from all over the world decided to come into coalition and form an organisation known as WICKED. It actually stands for World In Catastrophe, Killzone Experiment Department.
The organisation decided to come up with this man-made virus which targets the killzone (the human brains). This virus is very highly contagious, and it eats up the human brain. It is then known as The Flare, named after the solar flares. (Obviously) Their main objective of releasing this virus was to cut down population quickly, since they were severely out of resources to feed their people, as mentioned in the above. (I know it's so cruel and abhorrent, they have already regretted it so much)
After the release of the virus, the results were way more disastrous than they had ever planned. Yes, they had managed to cut down population, but it was cut down on a severely massive scale. The human race was already on their knees of extinction.
Afterwards, WICKED discovered that there are actually a small group of people who are immune to this virus, but it was like only less than 1% of the world population. They were known as the Immunes, and many people out there hated them, probably because they were envious that at least the Immunes still had some hope when it comes to survival.
WICKED then decided that they were going to select some of the Immunes, especially the ones that were still very young, to undergo ruthless trials in order to analyse their brains, to find out why they're different, why were they even immune to this extremely dangerous virus. Then that was when they hoped that they could come with at least a vaccine or even a cure through their brain patterns to get the blueprint. (Ruthless? Yes, like what I said, it was out of desperation. To save the human race from extinction.)
They selected the Immunes based on their intelligence and qualities (Maybe qualities like leadership? I don't even know. One of the books even specifically mentioned that WICKED congratulated Thomas for being the 'Real Leader' by carving that sentence all over the city.)
The series are mainly about what these young Immunes and even including a small group of those who weren't even immune went through, concepts such as erasing their memories away, putting them into the middle of the mazes to see how they've escaped, surviving through making their way to safe haven in a scorched waste land and so on. All for the sake of analysing their brains in the name of science and medicine.
One of the reasons why I'm utterly obsessed with this series is because I loved how the plot went. It's amazing how James Dashner could come up with such story-line! I'm so thankful for his existence.
Another reason is also because of this one and only true heroine that I really look up to. Teresa Agnes, which I'll be raving about her on my next post in time to come!
To find out what they've went through and whether the cure was finally discovered or not, simply read the books! (The Maze Runner, followed by The Scorch Trials and it all ends with The Death Cure. There's a prequel to the trilogy though, which is The Kill Order and it follows up with The Fever Code, which will only be released next year!)
I'll be back soon.
